5 Reasons why Crossfit helped complete a Tough Mudder

As the piece de resistance of endurance events and obstacle course racing. Tough Mudder races provide the perfect opportunity for individuals or teams of individuals of all abilities to test their physical and mental endurance while having fun in the British countryside. The beauty of a Tough Mudder weekend is the inclusion of all abilities to give it a crack. Whether just a 5k takes your fancy or the Holy Trinity (5K course, Classic and Europe’s toughest Mudder all in the same weekend), everybody is encouraged to bring with them their best physical version of themselves. Here’s why Crossfit helped me bring mine.

 

Variety

A Tough Mudder is going to test a vast range of your fitness ability and put elements to the test that you didn’t expect or didn’t know you had. Very similar to reading the gym whiteboard for the first time and not having a clue what half of it means. The point is a session in the Crossfit gym can show you how while you might be competing with the room, you’re really only competing with yourself to do better than yesterday. You’re going to get competitive with yourself at something that was only demonstrated to you moments before. This exactly how each obstacle will occur too.

Mental resistance

You don’t realise the mental restraint it requires to slide into Artic Enema or to just go from dry to soaking wet several times until you do so. You will not appreciate the fear factor of Electroshock Therapy that you have just prevailed through. Even the Blockness monster presents a slight fear of the unknown far more challenging on your mental fitness than your physical and I haven’t even mentioned the 12K running you’ll be faced with on the classic…………………

 

Push yourself

Every single Crossfit athlete on the planet has looked up at the whiteboard during a session or even in between the movements of a workout and been filled with instant dread of what they still have to complete. And we still sell our sole until that time-cap gobbles us up. The beauty of the Tough Mudder is its ability to make every time you sold your sole in the gym fell like it’s worth it. Some solid consistency in the gym pushing yourself and your limits every single time will make the fitness component of a Tough Mudder fell like a breeze. The whole idea is to create a sense of teamwork and camaraderie on the course. It’s physically impossible to complete the course without it. But the enjoyment of the occasion and the day out laughing with your mates can quite easily be squashed without a well-rounded fitness level. On paper, the Mud Mile and Everest followed by the Blockness Monster all encompassed in a 12k will look like a daunting prospect. With a rounded fitness level it’s simply a laugh in the sun with your friends.

 

A new Gym fit

We’ve just identified the benefits that Crossfit will provide to the completion of a Tough Mudder or any endurance race for that matter. However, in reality all but one of the headlines stated above are a part of life. Regular appearances in a Crossfit gym will force an individual into positive habits and the ambition that we do need to be a success in our daily lives. In the coming years I hope to complete Europe’s Toughest Mudder and the holy trinity. Taking all that has been discussed into consideration I will prepare for each with Crossfit at the foundation.
