Rogue Invitational Day 1:

Games Champions leading early

Published 2021

Day 1 of the 2021 Rogue invitational concluded with Tia-Clair Toomey and Justin Medieros leading the individual competitions despite the latter being yet to win an event.

Event 1, titles Go Ruck, consisted of: Wheelbarrow pull to Zeus, 10 over under log, 5 rope climb, 3 sandbags to top of hill (50/30) followed by the first 3 exercises in reverse order. The opening event was won by Canadian Pat Vellner and Icelander Annie Thorisdottir with times of 8:04:17 and 8:14:91 respectively.

Vellner eventually won the event in easy fashion despite constant pressure in the opening minutes from young American Justin Medieros, the same man who overcame him to win the 2021 CrossFit Games in August. Thorisdottir also crossed the finish line with distance between herself and the field with underdog Gabrielle Migala overcoming defending champion Tia-Clair Toomey for third.

Following the event Thorisdottir said to the media “I was trying to space myself; you could go out hard, but it was won on the second set of rope climbs”

Event 2, title the Bella Complex, took place in the evening consisting of 3 attempts to complete 1 Clean, 1 Shoulder to Overhead, 1 Front Squat, 1 Shoulder to Overhead and 1 Shoulder Press for max load. Toomey demonstrated her previous weightlifting background with a winning weight of 260lbs while odds on favourite for all strength events, Jeff Adler, was beaten in spectacular fashion by Brazilian Guilherme Malheiros who required just two of his 3 attempts to set a score of 367lbs.

“It was very nice, it felt good to finish in the second” said Malheiros who also dominated the 1 rep max Snatch event at the CrossFit Games.

Consistent performances of 6th and 3rd for Justin Medieros means he leads into day 2 with a 25-point advantage over Pat Vellner in second with Guilherme Malheiros just 5 points behind him. On the women’s side defending champion Tia-Clair Toomey with 190pts leads Annie Thorisdottir and Laura Horvath, both of which sit on 175pts.
